MALACCA: A petrol station operator in Semabok here lodged a police report over a fake WhatsApp message that went viral, claiming the kiosk was offering 'free fuel fill-ups' for motorcyclists. The frustrated 50 year-old petrol operator lodged a report at the Banda Hilir police station at 2.23pm
yesterday after being alerted about the message by friends who feared that motorcyclists would throng his station demanding free petrol. The message, which went viral on Sunday, read: "PERHATIAN!!!! Kepada warga melaka atau berdekatan, esok dekat shell semabok ada buat pengisian minyak free untuk motosikal..MOTOSIKAL JE K.. DARI PUKUL 12PM-2PM dan DARI PUKUL 4PM-6PM. TOLONG HEBOHKAN SEMUA RAKAN2 MOTOSIKAL DAN GROUP2 LAIN...Tq" (Attention all Malaccans and those nearby: Tomorrow, Shell Semabok will be offering free petrol fill-ups for motorcyclists between 12pm and 2pm, and 4pm and 6pm. Please spread the news to your other motorcyclist friends. Thank you.) The operator, Halmi Mohd Raji, claimed that he had not issued such a statement and said he is not accountable to those turning up at his kiosk for free petrol. On Friday, more than 1,500 motorcyclists enjoyed free RON95 full-tank fuel fill-ups, sponsored by 60 year-old local businessman Abdul Ghani Haron, in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Two days later, motorcyclists in Gebeng, Pahang, were also treated to free refuels at a petrol kiosk in Gebeng, from 12pm till 2pm and from 4pm to 6pm, after a message was announced on Facebook, through WhatsApp, and via notices pasted at the petrol kiosk. The rising price of fuel is a major concern among consumers after the cost of RON95 and RON97 increased by 15 sen to RM1.95 per litre and RM2.30 per litre, respectively, this month, hitting their highest point this year. Diesel is also up by 15 sen to RM1.90 per litre. The country's petrol and diesel prices have been managed on a float system since Dec 1, 2014, following the removal of fuel subsidies.
