PETALING JAYA: One of the nine Australians detained on Sunday for stripping down to their Jalur Gemilang-themed underwear is an adviser to an Australian Cabinet minister.
The Sydney Morning Herald said Jack Walker is a policy adviser to Christopher Pyne, the Minister for Defence Industry.
Walker reportedly worked for Pyne for three years.
“This matter is being handled appropriately by the Australian High Commissioner.
“Until we have a clearer picture of the process at hand it would be unwise to comment further,” a spokesperson for the minister told the Herald.
The Herald also reported that the men, aged 25 to 29, chanted “Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi” and wrapped themselves in Australian flags to celebrate their countryman Daniel Ricciardo’s victory at the F1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix in Sepang.
The group were detained at 5pm on the same day shortly after the incident.
They have being remanded for four days to facilitate investigations.
