Old folks home to close down after elderly woman is beaten

The Malacca government has ordered the closing down of an old folks home in Klebang, after a video clip of its caretaker beating an elderly woman went viral on social media.
The old folks home was given five days
to shut down, state women, family development and welfare committee chairperson Latipah Omar is quoted as saying by Berita Harian today.
Besides the abuse going viral, Latipah, said, the state issued the directive as the premises was also not registered.
"There are 73 registered caregiver centres in Malacca, and less than 20 centres are yet to register with the state Welfare Department," she said.
"A preliminary investigation showed that this old folks home was advised to register, since 2015, but it has stubbornly not done so," Latipah said after visiting the old folks home.
In the 11-second video, a 56-year-old man is seen scolding the old woman and then raising his hand at her.
The woman tried to shield herself, but the man hit her on her head, several times.
Within four hours of the video being uploaded on Facebook, it received more than 350,000 views and almost 600 shares.
The residents of the old folks home will be sent back to their next-of-kin or to other caregiving centres if their families are not able to take care of them, Latipah said.
