Malaysians spring into action to offer aid in wake of hospital blaze

JOHOR BARU: In true Malaysian spirit, people set their differences aside and were quick to offer help as soon as the fire broke out in Hospital Sultanah Aminah’s intensive care unit.
Representatives from NGOs
, businesses and local authorities were seen handing out food packets, dried food and bottles of mineral water to patients, family members and hospital staff who were affected by the fire as well as those on duty.
EcoWorld Development Group Bhd divisional general manager Datin Natrah Abdullah said the group sent 1,000 bottles of mineral water to the hospital as soon as they heard about the fire.
“We will check with the hospital from time to time to see what other help we can offer, as we have our volunteers on standby and are ready to help if more assistance is needed,” she said.
She said it was good to see people putting aside their differences, whether political or religious, to care for those in need.
Johor Baru Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation coordinator Lee Jiew Jiet said they sent 30 of its members to the hospital to lend a hand.
“The situation was quite chaotic at the hospital as we knew people needed help to distribute food and drinks, especially in the maternity wards, as well as assist patients in and out of other wards while the authorities attended to the crisis,” Lee said.
Renaissance Hotel marketing communications manager Hezrin Ali said it prepared 200 food packets and 200 bottles of mineral water for the hospital staff and those on duty.
“We are doing our part to help by sending packets of fried rice and sandwiches to fill the stomachs of those on duty as part of our spirit to serve,” he added.
Sales supervisor Alison Gan, 32, said it was heartwarming to see Malaysians come together to help each other in times of need.
Johor Crisis Relief Squad MCA committee member Chan San San, who arrived at the scene shortly after the fire broke out, said she contacted NGOs and businesses to send help to the hospital.
“We are more towards the coordinating side, as we will see what kind of help the hospital needs and send the necessary help,” she said.
Chan added that she contacted a few businesses, including a bread manufacturer to send 500 loaves of bread and packets of mineral water to be distributed to the affected people with the help of Rela members.
